The region covering Scarborough, Filey, Whitby and the North Yorks Moors was the second most visited place in the UK, new figures show<\/a> \u2013 coming second only to London.<\/p>\n

Data released by Visit England recently put the Borough of Scarborough in second place for the overall number of holiday trips and holiday spend over a three-year average between 2013 and 2015.
\nFor total trips and spend, including business and other types of trip, the Borough of Scarborough still secured fourth place in the UK table.<\/p>\n

The trips over the three-year period generated the borough some \u00a3361 million.<\/p>\n

Janet Deacon, Scarborough Borough Council Tourism Manager and Area Director for Welcome to Yorkshire said: \u201cWe\u2019re absolutely delighted with these recent figures, which show that we\u2019re really punching above our weight when it comes to attracting visitors to our wonderful borough.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never rest on our laurels and are continually exploring new ways to attract more visitors, including a diverse and exciting calendar of events, investment in new technology for providing the very best in visitor information and supporting our tourism partners to go from strength to strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"FlowerOur popular holiday parks helped contribute to the figures<\/h2>\n

No fewer than 6 of our Yorkshire holiday parks are either in or close to the Borough of Scarborough \u2013 meaning our visitors would have helped contribute to this figure.<\/p>\n

Flower of May<\/a>, The Haven<\/a> and Burnside<\/a> holiday parks are all situated along the coast while Rosedale Abbey<\/a> and Upper Carr<\/a> are more inland. Fir Tree<\/a> is located a little further south, close to the popular seaside resort of Bridlington.<\/p>\n

And Derek Bastman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said the good news on visitor spend and numbers was partly down to working closely with the private sector and holiday accommodation providers, such as Flower of May Holiday Parks.<\/p>\n

\u201cSupporting investment in new holiday accommodation, major events and projects such as the redevelopment of Scarborough Open Air Theatre is now paying dividends, as more visitors means greater spend,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis summer, we look forward to the opening of the eagerly awaited Alpamare Scarborough waterpark and plans for the borough\u2019s first multi-million pound multiplex cinema are now well underway.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we have been the driving force behind reinventing our borough to meet the high expectations of today\u2019s visitors, it is our partnership approach, working with those in the private sector that share our passion, which has really helped us to aim high and deliver results.
